As I rushed down the stairs to the street, not daring to take the elevator, it dawned on me that I had no idea what to do. In Nightridge, I’d been able to stop the rain of frogs, but only with Laura’s help. Here I had no psychic to stand beside me, and I desperately needed one. Pushing past the spirits who called to me, begging for help, I hurtled toward my death. For surely that’s where I was going. Who could step into fiery hail and expect to live?

“Yes, you do.”

A diminutive woman appeared in front of me from the darkened stairwell. Her English had the lovely lilt of a native Egyptian’s, and soulful eyes dominated her tiny face. Though she’d startled me, I liked her immediately.

“Sorry?”

“I don’t mean to intrude on your private thoughts, but I felt honor bound to correct you. You believe you have no powerful psychic to stand beside you, but you do. You have me.”

Before I could respond, Jackson came pounding down the stairs. “Kate, please think about this. You can’t go out there—it’s suicide.”

The strange woman appraised him. “Your friend will come to no harm, I promise you. You must let her fulfill her purpose.”

Jacks, not given to social niceties at the best of times, was understandably flustered, given the situation. “Who the fuck are you?”

“I am Fatima.” She returned her attention to me. “I heard about what happened at the temple, and I’ve been tracking you ever since.”

More screams from outside made me stiffen. “I have to go. I don’t know how to help, but I have to try.”

“You do know,” she said, slipping her small hand into mine. “And I will be with you.”

As Fatima’s skin made contact, an electric current shot through my body, staggering me. The strength went out of my legs and I sagged against the stairwell.

“What the fuck did you do to her? Let go!” Jacks lunged at the psychic, but thankfully I was able to summon enough strength to call him off.

“She didn’t do anything. She’s just…very strong.”

How could I explain that whatever was going on with Fatima was about a million times more intense than Laura’s abilities? Until then, Laura had been the most powerful psychic I’d ever encountered. Alone, I didn’t have much of a shot, but with Fatima by my side, I was galvanized.

She pulled me to my feet as if I weighed nothing. “Let us go.”

I’m not sure how many guys would have willingly plunged into a hail of fire, but as Jackson’s jaw tightened and he lowered his head, I saw that’s exactly what he intended to do.

“Jacks, you don’t need to do this. Stay here. I don’t want to see you hurt.”

“I’ll be fine,” he said, gently shaking me off. His words belied the fear in his voice. “If you’re determined to kill yourself, the least I can do is be there to make sure your body gets a decent burial.”

“I appreciate that.”

We were grinning stupidly at each other when Fatima tugged on my arm, giving me another jolt.
